An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Cellular Pathology Department at ABUHB for a full time Specialist Biomedical Scientist Band 6, working 37.5hrs per week. Based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, we are expanding our services and the successful candidate would join us at a time of improvement and development.
The successful applicant will show strong leadership skills and be committed to working successfully within a team, promoting the quality ethos in everything we do. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and attention to detail are key, as well as an experience of the value of high quality training, Health & Safety and understanding of Quality Management systems.
Technical skills required from the successful candidate will enable them to rotate around each of our sections: main lab, special stains, dissection, immunocytochemistry, and cryotomy. We have an enthusiastic workforce with a passion for quality and continuous improvement, looking to develop our services in response to the demands of the Health Board. Candidates should hold an accredited Degree in Biomedical Science, be HCPC registered and have attained their Specialist Portfolio in Histopathology.
Main duties of the job
- To undertake biomedical scientist laboratory duties within the lab, including specimen dissection, embedding and cutting, special stain and immunohistochemistry techniques, and to undertake the specialist BMS duties of supervision, management, training and support of lower grade staff members.
- The band 6 also provides operational support to the Band 7 team leaders - troubleshooting, problem solving and line managing in their absence.

Job responsibilities
- Undertake both routine and specialist analysis, laboratory procedures and perform duties commensurate with the training and qualifications of an experienced HCPC Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist.
- Work autonomously in the areas previously described.
- Have supervisory responsibility for less experienced scientific and technical staff, and for laboratory support staff.
- Be required to deputise for more senior staff during short term absences.
