Job Overview

We are looking to recruit a dynamic nurse with excellent clinical nursing skills to deliver a high-quality service to patients attending the Pre-operative Assessment unit at RGH – Royal Gwent Hospital. This developmental post offers an opportunity to become an important part of a specialised field of nursing, challenging yet satisfying. The successful candidate will initially hold the role of a Band 5 Pre-assessment nurse and, following competency framework completion—including the Clinical Patient Assessment Module—will progress to Band 6 Pre-assessment nurse. The role requires significant post-registration clinical experience, strong clinical care quality understanding, and excellent communication skills. The ability to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team is essential.

Responsibilities

  • The post holder will support patients through the Pre-assessment process, ensuring successful admission for surgery.
  • Performing pre-operative assessment to a high standard, case-managing and preparing patients safely and timely without direct supervision.
  • Collaborating with the unit lead and other health professionals to provide the highest standard of care, safety and service.
  • Advising and imparting sensitive information to patients’ relatives and carers.
  • Coordinating complex diagnostic, pathological investigations and reviews.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • NMC registration
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • A Masters in Professional Practice or working towards it

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Pre-operative assessment training/clinical assessment or DE70 qualification

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching & Assessing qualification
  • Experience of audit and evidence-based practice
  • Previous experience in Pre-assessment
