Job Overview

The post holder will be responsible for triaging referrals into the Gynaecology service from primary care and other secondary care departments. They will use established pathways to assist with clinically safe triage of referrals, manage and organise the care needs of patients, accept, downgrade, update, or reject referrals, as well as refer to appropriate services. The role also includes providing clinical support as required, operational management of the nurse triage team, promoting evidence‑based practice, leading the triage team on behalf of the Senior Nurse, ensuring training needs are met, and managing performance and audit.

Responsibilities

  • Use established pathways for safe triage of referrals.
  • Manage and organise patients’ healthcare needs; accept, downgrade, update, or reject referrals or refer to appropriate services.
  • Provide clinical support as required and manage the nurse triage team.
  • Promote evidence‑based practice and act as an accountable role model.
  • Lead the triage team and ensure training, education, and performance management.
  • Work with the team to maintain patient safety and ensure delegated activities comply with national guidelines.

Qualifications & Requirements

Essential criteria:

  • Level 1 Registered Nurse.
  • Current NMC registration.
  • Masters level degree or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience.
  • Up to date with mandatory training.
  • Willingness to undertake TAS trainer role.
  • Significant experience as a registered practitioner, especially in gynaecology.
  • Experience of triage of patients.
  • Evidence of ongoing personal & professional development and ability to encourage change management.
  • Risk assessment and DATIX training.
  • Experience managing staff and patients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • IT skills including Windows‑based software.
  • Ability to manage own workload and direct others.
  • Capable of dealing with aggressive patients/relatives/staff and de‑escalating situations.
  • Awareness of continuous quality improvement.
  • Clear understanding and implementation of the Values and Behaviours framework.
  • Creative, innovative and adaptable with strong organisational skills.
  • Motivated, positive role model, flexible with working hours.
