This post is designed to give the post holder an experience of working within Ophthalmology as a speciality. It will allow them to build on a desire to work in the speciality. They will be expected to take part in outpatient clinical activities and develop more minor interventional techniques such as minor ops and other treatments. The role will also have an active research component with one session a week committed to working as part of projects currently being undertaken in the department.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Ophthalmology department of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Delivery of eyecare across Wales is undergoing significant and exciting transformational change. This opportunity will allow the successful applicant to be at the forefront of the delivery of a unique eyecare service. The ophthalmology network within Wales is working closely together with primary care to provide a joined-up integrated eyecare pathway. Any successful applicant would be expected to engage in multi-disciplinary working to allow the highest quality care to be delivered.

Aneurin Bevan UHB is the largest HB in South Wales and serves a diverse population of approximately 670,000 across 4 main sites. The Ophthalmology department has a consultant body that provides a comprehensive secondary care service. As part of transformational reform within NHS Wales Ophthalmology, any successful applicant should expect to be affiliated to a South East Wales regional centre of excellence in the near future (serving a population of 1.5 million) as the Executive teams across the three main health Boards are committed to the development of a regional service.

ABUHB has an expanding R&D department and there are close links with Cardiff University School of Vision Science where there are a number of internationally renowned vision research teams.

The post holder will take part in general ophthalmology clinics as well as the emergency eye clinic. They will not be expected to take part in the on-call rota but may wish to shadow senior colleagues to enhance their own learning. The post holder will be expected to support the research taking place in the department and will have one session a week dedicated to support current research activities primarily through a data analysis, non-patient facing role.

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the post.

Finally, the post holder is expected to:

• Observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
• Observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
• Be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
