We are delighted to offer a rewarding opportunity for an enthusiastic and skilled Ophthalmic Advanced Practitioner to join our progressive and patient‑focused ophthalmology team. This part‑time position (0.6 WTE) is open to all non‑medical registered eye‑care professionals who are passionate about delivering high‑quality specialist care. In this autonomous senior clinical role, you will use your advanced ophthalmic knowledge and highly specialised assessment skills to provide expert, patient‑centred care across both new and follow‑up clinics. You will take responsibility for diagnosing, planning, implementing and monitoring individual treatment plans using evidence‑based practice and advanced clinical reasoning. Working closely with consultant ophthalmologists and service leads, you will help ensure timely, safe and effective patient pathways, contributing to improved outcomes and a consistent, high‑quality experience for every patient. As a key member of our multi‑disciplinary team, you will offer highly specialist advice, support and leadership to colleagues, helping to maintain excellent standards of clinical practice and governance. You will be encouraged to develop your expertise through advanced training, specialist courses, and ongoing professional development, with opportunities to contribute to service development, audit and quality improvement.
Responsibilities
- Provide highly skilled autonomous senior practitioner care and expert knowledge in specialist testing.
- Deliver patient‑centred clinical care to improve outcomes by enhancing timeliness and consistency.
- Diagnose, plan, implement and monitor individual treatment plans and care pathways for new and follow‑up patients using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence‑based practice.
- Work closely with consultant ophthalmologists and non‑medical service leads, supervising and providing specialist advice to multidisciplinary team members while ensuring safe practice and compliance with clinical governance.
- Possibly undertake non‑medical prescribing within your sphere of competence, complying with the non‑medical prescribing policy and professional body guidance.
- Attend advanced training and specialist courses to maintain and develop skills and evidence‑based practice.
- Deputise for the Lead of services of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board where required.
Qualifications and Knowledge – Essential
- Current registration with NMC/HCPC/GOC on the relevant part of the register.
- Postgraduate Professional Certificate in Ophthalmology sub‑specialty.
- Master’s degree or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience in nursing, orthoptics, or optometry.
- Independent prescriber qualification or Advanced Practitioner Portfolio, or evidence of working at a Masters level.
Experience – Essential
- Experience in an optometry or ophthalmic sub‑specialty outpatient clinic setting.
- Ability to diagnose, assess and manage ophthalmic sub‑specialty patients using highly specialised equipment such as OCT, slit lamp, goniocopy and fundoscopy.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage a complex caseload.
- Effective communication with patients and liaison with multi‑agency partners, both verbally and in writing.
Skills and Attributes – Essential
- Strong interpersonal, networking and counselling skills.
- Ability to reflect and critically appraise performance.
- Excellent communication skills with staff and the public.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Supervisory or management qualification.
- Teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent.
- Postgraduate Higher Certificate in Ophthalmic sub‑specialty.
- Managerial experience in a clinical environment.
- Evidence of participation in research and audit.
- Development of a service in a previous role.
- Welsh language skills (levels 1‑5) in understanding, speaking, reading and writing.
