The Senior Physiotherapist (non‑rotational) is a specialist clinician who independently manages a specialist clinical caseload within the Monmouth Community. The post holder is part of the Older Adult Integrated Team at Monnow Vale Health and Social Care Facility, working alongside Health and Social Care colleagues. They supervise, delegate, train and develop others, and contribute to changes that improve patient care and service efficiency.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Conduct holistic physiotherapy assessments and deliver specialist, client‑centred interventions in patients’ homes and other community settings.
  • Work autonomously within the multidisciplinary integrated team to develop and implement personalised treatment plans that maximise patient independence and prevent hospital admission.
  • Supervise junior staff and students, collaborate with other health and social care professionals, and manage a caseload of complex and varied needs.

Welsh language skills are desirable, but Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Job Responsibilities

  • Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner and manage clinical risk.
  • Be professionally and legally accountable for a designated patient caseload, prioritise work, and balance other patient‑related and professional demands.
  • Assess patient capacity, obtain valid informed consent, and work within a legal framework when capacity is lacking.
  • Carry out comprehensive assessment and accurate diagnosis using investigative, palpatory, analytical, and clinical reasoning skills.
  • Implement specialist physiotherapy treatments and programmes.
  • Use highly developed manual skills for physical treatment techniques.
  • Formulate individualised clinical management programmes and plan specialised care.
  • Provide advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers, and other disciplines to promote understanding of physiotherapy aims and ensure continuation of treatment.
  • Initiate multidisciplinary/multi‑agency team meetings and case conferences to coordinate patient care, including review of progress and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and up‑to‑date clinical records in line with Health Board guidance.
  • Produce patient‑related reports for other disciplines or agencies.
  • Adhere to Health Board, Professional and National clinical guidelines and maintain knowledge of national standards.
  • Assist the Team Lead/Physiotherapy Manager(s) with prioritisation and management of departmental caseload.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues and professionals.
  • Deputise for senior staff where appropriate.
  • Participate in the Health Board performance review process as both appraiser and appraisee.
  • Assist in recruitment and selection procedures for the Physiotherapy Service.
  • Contribute to staff induction.
  • Lead departmental meetings to coordinate information exchange and local service delivery.
  • Ensure safe use of equipment and advise on resource availability.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of the Health Board and Physiotherapy Directorate.
  • Maintain state registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and provide evidence of registration.
  • Engage in continuing professional development, reflective practice, literature review, and local in‑service training.
  • Participate in the in‑service training programme as an active member.
  • Provide tuition to Specialist and General Rotational Band 6, Band 5 physiotherapists and support workers as identified.
  • Complete a clinical educator course and supervise undergraduate physiotherapy students, collaborating with universities to meet academic standards.
  • Provide teaching to other disciplines when requested.
  • Participate in mandatory/statutory training as outlined by the Health Board.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).
  • Specialist training and experience in the relevant field to a postgraduate diploma or equivalent, with demonstrable knowledge and experience.
  • Broad range of Physiotherapy clinical experience.
  • Manual handling training and experience.
  • Community and ward experience.
  • Aware of Local and National clinical guidelines.

Desirable

  • Completion of a clinical educators course or equivalent.
  • MCSP.
  • Previous Band 6 experience.
  • Previous Integrated Team experience.
