Job Overview: Applications are invited for a locum Consultant Breast Surgeon for the duration of 1 year, based at the newly opened Specialist Breast Unit at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Ystrad Mynach, with occasional operating lists at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport. Secretarial support, junior staff, and full IT facilities will be provided. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic team of breast specialists within the division of General Surgery but will not be required to be part of the General Surgery on-call rota. Training in the diagnosis and management of both symptomatic and screen-detected breast cancers, and breast reconstruction is essential. The appointee will work with a multidisciplinary breast team delivering breast services and within the Health Board. There is an established multidisciplinary team including surgery, radiology, histo/cytopathology, oncology, radiotherapy, with specialist nursing support. There are close links with plastic surgery.
Main duties of the job include:
- To maintain and develop subspecialty interests that complement those of the department alongside the current team.
- To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service.
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate.
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board’s procedures and operating policies.
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Division’s and Health Board’s service plans.
- To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division, or the Health Board.
