Advanced Practice Occupational Therapist - Critical Care in Cwmbran

This Senior Advanced Practitioner Occupational Therapist role is based at Grange University Hospital within our Critical Care and Therapies team. You will deliver advanced occupational therapy interventions to critical care patients and support the wider Occupational Therapy team across ABUHB. The position is at Band 3 and follows the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable.

Professional Aspects Of The Occupational Therapy Role Include:

• Utilise advanced knowledge and skills to assess, treat and manage a varied caseload on a busy critical care unit.
• Identify and prioritise patients most likely to benefit from occupational therapy intervention.
• Make independent, confident decisions and clinical reasoning with a complex and varied caseload.
• Support seamless transition of occupational therapy care on step‑down from the critical care unit.
• Plan discharges home directly from critical care.
• Work jointly with the multi‑disciplinary team to optimise the impact of occupational therapy.
• Identify and implement changes to support the development of this emerging role and service.
• Utilise and implement the growing evidence base for occupational therapy practice within critical care, contributing where possible.

Qualifications And Knowledge – Essential criteria:

• Occupational Therapy degree or diploma.
• HCPC registration.
• Master’s level study (CQFW level 7) – at least 20 or 30 credits in modules such as Leadership, Change Management, Occupational Therapy Practice, and Practice modules linked to a clinical area.
• Accredited practice placement educator.

Qualifications And Knowledge – Desirable criteria:

• Member of a relevant RCOT Specialist Section.
• Certificate in Leadership and/or Management.

Experience – Essential criteria:

• Extensive experience in physical health settings, including critical care, major trauma, neurology and in‑patient settings.
• Significant experience at a senior Occupational Therapy level.
• Experience supervising less experienced Occupational Therapists.
• Involvement in innovative working practices.
• Contribution to development of local clinical guidelines.

Experience – Desirable criteria:

• Experience of research and/or audit.
• Training in providing clinical supervision.

Skills and Attributes – Essential criteria:

• Ability to assess, plan and implement highly specialised interventions.
• Capacity to apply a broad range of occupational therapy interventions using a whole‑person, person‑centred approach.
• Ability to use highly specialist clinical skills to interpret complex assessments for second opinion.
• Negotiation and problem‑solving skills within the MDT.

Skills and Attributes – Desirable criteria:

• Application of national initiatives within an Occupational Therapy service.
• Welsh speaker (Level 1) or willingness to work towards Welsh proficiency.

Other – Essential criteria:

• Ability to travel around geographical areas to meet the requirement of the post.
• Committed to person‑centred, non‑discriminatory practice.
• Documented evidence of CPD.
