The advertised post is for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine based at the Grange University Hospital Critical Care Unit near Cwmbran. The successful candidate will have a 10‑session contract and will participate in the ICU night on call rota (frequency currently 1:17 nights) and weekend working activity (frequency currently 1:7 weekends). In the future, with agreement following job planning, the candidate may work flexibly to provide critical care and other specialty work across the Health Board and may increase their total sessional commitment up to a maximum of 12 sessions. Consultants will work an annualised job plan based upon their sessional commitment.
The staffing model operates with 2–3 consultants every day 08:00–18:00, then one consultant on‑call for the evening and night (resident 17:00–~21:00 then non‑resident until 09:00 the following day). There is the expectation to provide remote telephone advice and to return to site where clinically necessary.
Main duties of the job:
- 10 sessions with 7 DCCs and 3 SPAs; the ratio of DCCs to SPAs may vary with agreement of the post holder and the Health Board.
- Job share applicants are welcome; any modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis.

Job responsibilities:
This position involves regulated activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012). Appropriate checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer: Enhanced criminal record check with bar list information for adults and children. A submission for Disclosure will be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Salary: £114,099 to £166,585 a year, pro rata.
