Qualifications

• Registered with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) as a qualified Clinical Psychologist
• Honours degree in Psychology, giving eligibility for Graduate membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS)
• Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, or equivalent accredited by the BPS, giving eligibility for membership of the Division of Clinical Psychology of the British Psychology Society

Experience

• Three year Doctorate training across a range of client groups but must include children
• Significant post qualification clinical experience working with children with chronic health conditions and their families
• Has completed at least 10 training days per year on courses relevant to the provision of services to children and young people with physical health conditions

Aptitude and Abilities

• Ability to communicate and relate to people warmly and with empathy
• Detailed knowledge of at least one therapeutic orientation related to the needs of obese children and young people.
• Ability to provide direction through supervision, teaching and training to other psychologists, disciplines and agencies.

Job Overview

The ABUHB Connect children’s weight management service was the first in Wales and currently includes a specialist dietitian, nurse specialist, therapy assistant practitioner, consultant and this paediatric practitioner psychology post. This post is a Band 8a but we invite less experienced applicants to apply with a view to starting on Band 7 and commit to a plan to develop into the 8a role. The MDT supports children and young people to manage their weight and wellbeing through individualised interventions delivered via one to one, group, face to face and virtual clinics depending on individual need. The team enjoys the benefits of flexible working with a mixture of base, home and clinic settings across the health board. There are 0.4 wte additional hours within Child and Family Psychology and Therapies Service which may be available to make the post up to full time, subject to successful additional interview with the relevant service area.

Main Duties of the Job

The Paediatric Psychologist post offers an exciting opportunity to join an established Children's weight management service working alongside existing psychology posts in the adult weight management team and within a supportive and innovative paediatric multidisciplinary team. We are looking for a clinician who is motivated and highly empathetic with experience of working with children and young people and their families. You will provide psychological services to children and young people living with obesity and their families using appropriate therapeutic interventions both face to face and virtually. You will provide teaching, training and supervision to psychologists and other members of the MDT and conduct research and audits to help develop the service along with contributing to the development of psychological services and participate in service development, improvement and planning.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board support flexible working. The salary scale for a Band 3 has been adjusted as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and will be implemented in August 2026 backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.
