I am working with a leading UK EPC contractor operating at the forefront of the energy transition market and are seeking an experienced BESS Technical Manager to join its Energy division. The organisation delivers large-scale projects across Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), solar PV, hydrogen, and is looking for a technical leader to support its continued growth.

This role is central to the end-to-end delivery of major energy projects, providing technical oversight and coordination through business development, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning.

Acting as the organisation’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) for utility-scale BESS, the BESS Technical Manager will guide technical activities across the full project lifecycle.

Pre-Construction Responsibilities

  • Support business development teams to ensure tender responses align with client expectations, regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the preparation of BESS tender submissions.
  • Act as the Pre-Construction Project Manager, liaising with clients, designers and technical leads to ensure compliance with client requirements, regulations and the UK Grid Code.
  • Lead technical risk assessments and value engineering to ensure designs are affordable, practical and operationally robust.
  • Develop detailed testing and commissioning strategies, including acceptance criteria.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with OEMs, ICPs, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Review technical specifications and scopes of work, including SCADA and other key packages.
  • Coordinate bid evaluations and support EPC planning and cost estimation as the BESS SME.

Construction & Commissioning Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing technical expertise to Project Managers during project delivery.
  • Respond to technical queries from clients, suppliers and internal teams.
  • Review and approve vendor technical submissions and drawings.
  • Participate in design reviews, FATs and quality assurance activities.
  • Carry out site visits to ensure installation quality and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Oversee the preparation, review and approval of handover and as-built documentation.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a strong electrical engineering background and a broad understanding of the full lifecycle of utility-scale BESS EPC projects. They will be confident coordinating multidisciplinary teams and operating in client-facing environments.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (BEng/MEng), HNC, or equivalent
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred

Experience

  • Professional experience within an EPC, technical advisory or owner’s engineer environment
  • Experience delivering utility-scale BESS projects
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver projects from concept to commissioning
  • Strong understanding of UK grid compliance and connection processes
