The role at a glance

The Project Engineer is a core member of the Projects Department, responsible for technical coordination and day-to-day delivery control of assigned engineering work. You will connect project scope, engineering, procurement, suppliers, production, installation and commissioning so that contributors use the correct information, understand what is required and meet agreed technical gates.

On larger or subcontractor-led projects, you will work alongside the responsible Project Manager and own defined technical delivery work packages and interfaces. You are not expected to be the technical authority, but you will need enough technical grounding and curiosity to engage confidently with engineers, clients and suppliers, obtain the right input and keep delivery moving.

What you will be doing

  • Maintain a working understanding of the technical scope, deliverables, interfaces, acceptance requirements, assumptions and constraints for your allocated work, supported by clear delivery controls and records.
  • Control the issue, receipt and status of technical information. Confirm that subcontractors and internal teams are using the correct approved information and that superseded information is identified and withdrawn.
  • Coordinate interfaces between Engineering, Procurement, Production, suppliers, installation and commissioning, making responsibilities, dependencies and required dates clear.
  • Define, track and evidence readiness for technical reviews, inspections, hold points and go or no-go gates. Escalate missing information, unresolved actions or incomplete evidence before progression is authorised.
  • Monitor supplier and subcontractor deliverables, progress and performance. Identify omissions, conflicts, delays and technical deviations, obtain the right engineering assessment and raise potential project implications with the Project Manager.
  • Communicate technical delivery status, dependencies, gate readiness and unresolved issues clearly to client, supplier and internal stakeholders. Maintain accurate, auditable project records.

What success looks like

  • You can explain the technical and contractual outcome, key deliverables, interfaces, acceptance requirements and principal risks of your assigned work.
  • The right technical information reaches the right people at the right time, and gates are not passed without the agreed evidence and approvals.
  • You identify missing, conflicting or unclear information, and technical deviations, early enough for the right people to resolve them before delivery is affected.
  • You communicate technical progress, dependencies, gate readiness and unresolved issues clearly to technical client and supplier stakeholders.
  • You build confidence through reliable follow-through, constructive challenge, disciplined records and sound judgement.

Who we are looking for

You will have a technical qualification, apprenticeship or demonstrable engineering experience in electrical, control, mechanical or a related discipline and be able to interpret drawings, specifications and design documentation.

  • Delivery coordination experience: you have personally helped to control subcontractor-led or engineering-led delivery, including technical information, interfaces, supplier activity, gate or inspection readiness, deviations or concessions, project records and follow-through.
  • Technical curiosity and judgement: you are comfortable asking informed questions about unfamiliar technical subjects, while recognising the limits of your competence and involving the correct technical authority.
  • Organisation and communication: you are highly organised and detail-conscious. You seek information, check understanding, record decisions accurately and raise concerns early.
  • Ownership and approach: you take responsibility for moving work forward, challenge ambiguity constructively and protect AMS Nuclear from inadvertent commitments. Experience in EC&I, nuclear or another regulated engineering environment would be an advantage.

Working arrangements

You will report to the Senior Project Manager and work alongside Project Managers and Engineering. Engineering retains technical authority, while the Project Manager remains accountable for overall delivery and client commitments. The role is based at Bridgwater Gateway, North Petherton, with travel to client and supplier sites as required. The contracted working week is 37.5 hours.
