The role at a glance
As a Procurement Coordinator, you will source, order and expedite the goods and services needed for project delivery and business operations. Working from project requirements and bills of materials, you will obtain quotations, identify suitable sources of supply, raise purchase orders and maintain order progress.
This is a hands-on purchasing role in a growing engineering SME. The immediate focus is on managing day-to-day purchasing activity reliably: progressing quotations and purchase orders, keeping procurement systems current, monitoring delivery commitments and following issues through to closure.
For the right person, the role also offers the opportunity to develop as AMS Nuclear grows, taking on broader procurement and supply‑chain responsibilities over time, including supplier performance, purchasing strategy and improving value, resilience and control across the supply base.
What you will be doing
- Review project bills of materials and purchasing requirements with project and engineering colleagues, ensuring quantities, specifications and required dates are understood.
- Identify suitable sources of supply, obtain and compare quotations, and highlight material differences in price, lead time, quality or risk.
- Prepare and raise purchase orders through the appropriate approval route, keeping procurement systems current with quotations, orders, acknowledgements and expected delivery dates.
- Expedite suppliers, monitor delivery commitments and communicate shortages, delays or incomplete documentation early, with a clear next step.
- Identify where forecast material costs exceed the available project budget and ensure this is understood before orders are released.
- Work with production colleagues and suppliers to resolve supplier‑related non‑conformances, including obtaining suitable responses, replacements and corrective actions.
- Initiate supplier approval, assessment and ongoing performance review and help identify practical opportunities to improve value, supply standard, lead times and supply resilience.
- Support strategic purchasing by analysing supplier spend and buying patterns to identify cost‑saving opportunities and establishing supplier agreements to ensure commercial value.
What success looks like
- Quotations, purchase orders, approvals, acknowledgements and delivery dates are accurate, current and easy for the project team to understand.
- Delivery commitments are monitored actively and emerging issues are raised early, rather than becoming last‑minute problems.
- You follow supplier queries and non‑conformances through until there is an appropriate response and agreed action.
- You build constructive supplier relationships while protecting AMS Nuclear purchasing controls and commercial interests.
Who we are looking for
You will bring some experience in procurement, purchasing, supply‑chain coordination or a similarly demanding administrative role. You do not need a particular qualification, but you will be comfortable learning technical requirements and using purchasing or business systems accurately.
- Organisation and ownership: methodical, detail-conscious and reliable. You keep track of actions, prioritise competing demands and follow work through to completion.
- Communication and relationships: clear and professional with colleagues and suppliers. You ask questions, pursue responses and challenge ambiguity constructively.
- Commercial and practical judgement: able to compare quotations and recognise when price, lead time, quality, terms or risk need to be escalated before a commitment is made.
- Approach and values: adaptable, collaborative and calm under pressure, with a genuine commitment to the AMS Nuclear values of doing the right thing, communicating to succeed, can‑do ownership, better every time and one team.
Working arrangements
You will report to the Operations Director and work closely with Project Management, Engineering, Workshop, Finance and Administration colleagues, together with suppliers. The role is based at Bridgwater Gateway, North Petherton, with occasional travel to supplier, customer or other company sites as required. The contracted working week is 37.5 hours.
