About the role

This is a solid opportunity for an experienced bookkeeper to join a busy outsourced accounting team, taking ownership of day-to-day financial records across a portfolio of clients. You'll be the transactional foundation that client reporting and VAT submissions depend on, working to high standards of accuracy, keeping records audit-ready, and maintaining strong working relationships with clients at an operational level.

What you'll be doing

  • Maintaining accurate bookkeeping records across a client portfolio using cloud-based accounting platforms, ensuring transactions are correctly coded and reconciled on time.
  • Processing supplier invoices, expenses, and bank transactions, and resolving queries with clients or the Assistant Manager where needed.
  • Performing bank reconciliations and resolving discrepancies in line with agreed deadlines and quality standards.
  • Preparing and submitting VAT returns under the supervision of the Assistant Manager, ensuring accuracy and HMRC compliance.
  • Maintaining organised client records within Karbon and the firm's document management systems, keeping all files audit-ready at all times.
  • Flagging errors, anomalies, or unusual transactions to the Assistant Manager promptly with appropriate supporting notes.
  • Liaising with clients professionally to gather information, resolve queries, and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of bookkeeping workflows and client onboarding processes.

What you'll bring

  • Minimum five years' experience in a bookkeeping, accounts assistant, or similar finance support role.
  • Solid working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping and VAT principles.
  • Familiarity with Xero and/or other cloud-based platforms such as Sage 50 or QuickBooks.
  • Competence in Microsoft Excel for data checking and reconciliation work.
  • Good understanding of bank reconciliation processes and accounts payable/receivable.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at grade C/4 or above.
  • A methodical, detail-focused approach with the ability to manage a varied workload to deadline.
  • Clear and professional communication skills for client-facing work.

Desirable

  • Experience using Dext or similar document capture tools.
  • Prior experience in a practice or outsourced finance environment.
  • AAT Level 2 completed, or currently studying towards AAT Level 3.
  • Bookkeeping qualification such as ICB.

What's on offer

  • A varied, client-facing role within a supportive outsourced accounting team.
  • Exposure to a broad portfolio of clients across different sectors.
