About the role
This is a solid opportunity for an experienced bookkeeper to join a busy outsourced accounting team, taking ownership of day-to-day financial records across a portfolio of clients. You'll be the transactional foundation that client reporting and VAT submissions depend on, working to high standards of accuracy, keeping records audit-ready, and maintaining strong working relationships with clients at an operational level.
What you'll be doing
- Maintaining accurate bookkeeping records across a client portfolio using cloud-based accounting platforms, ensuring transactions are correctly coded and reconciled on time.
- Processing supplier invoices, expenses, and bank transactions, and resolving queries with clients or the Assistant Manager where needed.
- Performing bank reconciliations and resolving discrepancies in line with agreed deadlines and quality standards.
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns under the supervision of the Assistant Manager, ensuring accuracy and HMRC compliance.
- Maintaining organised client records within Karbon and the firm's document management systems, keeping all files audit-ready at all times.
- Flagging errors, anomalies, or unusual transactions to the Assistant Manager promptly with appropriate supporting notes.
- Liaising with clients professionally to gather information, resolve queries, and maintain positive working relationships.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of bookkeeping workflows and client onboarding processes.
What you'll bring
- Minimum five years' experience in a bookkeeping, accounts assistant, or similar finance support role.
- Solid working knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping and VAT principles.
- Familiarity with Xero and/or other cloud-based platforms such as Sage 50 or QuickBooks.
- Competence in Microsoft Excel for data checking and reconciliation work.
- Good understanding of bank reconciliation processes and accounts payable/receivable.
- GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at grade C/4 or above.
- A methodical, detail-focused approach with the ability to manage a varied workload to deadline.
- Clear and professional communication skills for client-facing work.
Desirable
- Experience using Dext or similar document capture tools.
- Prior experience in a practice or outsourced finance environment.
- AAT Level 2 completed, or currently studying towards AAT Level 3.
- Bookkeeping qualification such as ICB.
