Dearneside Fabrications Limited are looking for an Apprentice Plater Welder to complete a Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship and join their team.

Year 1: Alongside the training block from AMRC, we complement this training with learning how to apply this to our operation. Working with the other apprentices, forming a bond with the fellow apprentices and the mentor. There will be projects to work on, and involvement in finished items.

Year 2: The apprentice will start working under their own initiative, with help from the mentor, in producing finished items from drawings and weld processes. Ensuring that the quality standards are correct. Understanding the processes involved and the equipment involved as well as H&S precautions and the impact when things are done incorrectly.

Year 3: Less interaction with the mentor on completing items, however, that contact will still remain. Dealing directly with contracts departments rework completion and finishing. Working with all finished mild and stainless steels.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Fabrication and welding of architectural metalwork consisting of staircases, balconies, gates and Juliet balconies.
  • To take drawings and then set out and fabricate from mild or stainless steel parts by welding or bolting together to a required fabrication standard.
  • To be conversant in the H&S requirements and abide by these rules.
  • To weld to a coded standard in both MIG and TIG.

The fabrication is a noisy environment; PPE is worn all day and overhead cranes are in operation. The welding department is very busy. Quality of workmanship is high and all operatives are responsible for the quality of work they output.

Established in 1994, Dearneside Fabrications have gradually become one of the largest and most respected specialist steel fabricators servicing the UK construction industry. With an enviable reputation for architectural metalwork working nationwide. All other areas of steel fabrication work are carried performed by our highly-skilled operatives, including Balconies, Secondary Steelwork, Staircases, Balustrades and General Metalwork.

Things to consider: During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job. Please note the AMRC Training Centre reserves the right to close applications ahead of the published closing date.

Qualification Requirements: Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements both of the following: GCSE English language C or 4 or above, GCSE Maths C or 4 or above. Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
