Apprentice CNC Programmer in Sheffield

Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering Limited are looking for an Apprentice CNC Programmer (Work Rolls) to complete a Level 3 Engineering Support Maintenance Technician apprenticeship and join their team. The purpose of this role is to develop as a highly skilled CAD/CAM specialist who can produce accurate technical drawings and create CNC programmes to support the Rolls Division. In the role you will build expertise in Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing and CNC programming within a heavy-engineering environment, ensuring high-quality, efficient and safe production. Through structured training and hands-on experience, the apprentice will learn to contribute effectively to engineering workflows while consistently promoting strong Health & Safety standards.

Role & responsibilities:

• The apprentice will be creating precise technical drawings using CAD software and developing CNC programmes through CAM tools to support the Rolls Division with high-quality digital models and machining instructions.
• The role involves learning how CAD and CAM connect to real-world machining in a heavy engineering setting, and working closely with engineers and machinists to ensure all designs and programmes meet production needs.
• The apprentice will contribute to safe, efficient and high-quality manufacturing through accurate design and programming, while maintaining strong Health & Safety standards and challenging unsafe behaviour when required.
• As the apprentice progresses, they will build their skills through hands-on training and structured learning, taking on additional responsibilities as their capability grows.
• Attend and actively participate in all academic learning, training sessions, and assessments as part of the apprenticeship programme.
• Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality for both workplace duties and academic commitments.
• Complete the Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours (KSB) requirements in-line with apprenticeship standards.
• Build and maintain a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate learning, skills development, and competency throughout the apprenticeship.
• Show a strong commitment to studies, including completing assignments, coursework, and independent learning tasks on time.
• Demonstrate motivation to learn new skills and a willingness to develop professionally and personally.
• Show commitment to self-improvement and continuous development.
• Carry out workplace duties responsibly, demonstrating commitment to the role and the organisation.
• Follow all company policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

• GCSE English language C or 4 or above.
• GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
