BWSC Generation Services UK Limited are looking for an EC&I Multi-skilled Apprentice to complete a Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprenticeship and join their team. Working under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, the EC&I Apprentice is a trainee professional learning to install, maintain, and repair the complex systems that manage power generation. Under the guidance of experienced technicians and engineers, you will develop practical skills across electrical systems, PLCs, instrumentation, and control equipment while adhering to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

The role involves assisting with inspections, calibrations, commissioning activities, and routine maintenance tasks, as well as learning to interpret electrical drawings, loop diagrams, and control schematics. You will actively contribute to site activities, participate in training and college-based learning, and demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and professional development.

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Role & responsibilities
  • Assist with the installation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical/mechanical systems, including motors, MCCs, panels, cabling, and power distribution equipment
  • Support fault-finding and repair of electrical equipment associated with boilers, conveyors, pumps, fans, and auxiliary plant
  • Carry out basic electrical testing using approved test equipment under supervision
  • Assist in maintaining and troubleshooting control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and DCS equipment
  • Support control panel checks, I/O testing, and simple modifications under instruction
  • Learn to interpret control schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic diagrams
  • Assist with inspection, calibration, and maintenance of process instrumentation such as pressure, temperature, flow, and level transmitters
  • Support loop checks, instrument isolations, and reinstatement in line with site procedures
  • Help diagnose instrumentation faults affecting plant performance and availability
  • Work alongside operations and engineering teams during start-ups, shutdowns, and routine plant operation
  • Support planned maintenance activities and breakdown response to minimise downtime
  • Use the site CMMS to log work orders and record findings

  • Proficient with a number of computer applications
  • Good interpersonal skills, self-motivated, flexible and committed attitude
  • Manual dexterity for handling delicate instruments
  • Numerate with the ability to interpret data and collate figures
  • A logical approach to troubleshooting complex systems under pressure

Qualification Requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
