What’s This Apprenticeship All About?
You’ll join the Ice Cream Processing team at Colworth Science Park (UK), working in a high-tech workshop called the Advanced Prototype Engineering Centre (APEC). Your job? Build real machines and equipment that are used to invent and test brand-new ice cream products. This is a Level 3 engineering apprenticeship, delivered with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at the University of Sheffield. You’ll learn while you earn, combining hands‑on work with expert training.
Why Ice Cream Engineering Is Cool (Literally)
Ice cream is one of the most complex foods in the world to make. It involves mixing, shaping, filling, coating, freezing, loads of clever engineering, and tasting! You’ll be helping develop the processes behind famous brands sold all over the world — while learning skills that can lead to a long‑term engineering career.
Role & responsibilities:
- You’ll learn how to turn ideas and drawings into real, working equipment. This includes:
- Making parts from metal and food‑safe plastics
- Cutting, shaping, welding, and assembling components
- Working from engineering drawings
- Helping build one‑off prototype machines (no boring mass production!)
- Working with designers, engineers, and scientists to solve problems
- Making sure everything is safe, clean, and food‑grade
Occasional travel nationally or internationally will be required after training.
Skills required:
- Good problem‑solving skills
- Good IT literacy (Basic computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Willingness to learn and work as part of a team
Personal qualities the candidate must have:
- Like design & technology, physics, chemistry, or engineering
- Enjoy hands‑on work and figuring out how things work
- Are curious, practical, and like solving problems
- Are interested in food, manufacturing, or innovation
Qualification Requirements
Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements Applicants need both of the following:
- GCSE English language C or 4 or above
- GCSE Maths C or 4 or above
Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
