Overview

Steelphalt are looking for an Apprentice Asphalt Laboratory Technician to complete a level 3 Engineering & Manufacturing Support Technician apprenticeship.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory setting while working towards a nationally recognized qualification. The candidate will support the testing and analysis of asphalt materials to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer specifications.

Role & responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and testing of asphalt samples using standard laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Record and report test results accurately and promptly
  • Verify compliance of results and initiate corrective action where necessary
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment in accordance with health and safety regulations
  • Support senior technicians in conducting quality control checks on raw materials and finished products
  • Help calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Learn and apply relevant industry standards (e.g., BS EN standards) and internal procedures
  • Participate in training and development activities as part of the apprenticeship program
  • Perform other duties efficiently and effectively as required by the Technical department

Based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, SteelPhalt is ideally located to source slag cost-effectively from the surrounding steel industry to sustainably create asphalt. With a reputation for first-class products matched by a commitment to innovation and sustainability, SteelPhalt works in partnership with councils, local authorities, and contractors nationwide to deliver durable roads for a sustainable world.

Things to consider

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
