We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to play a leading role in the development of next-generation automotive power electronics. This position offers the opportunity to take technical ownership of inverter mechanical design, working from clean-sheet concepts through to high-volume production. You'll be involved in every stage of product development, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, manufacturable solutions for electric propulsion systems. This opportunity is best suited to engineers who have personally led the complete mechanical development of an inverter—not simply individual components—and understand the challenges of designing products for large-scale automotive manufacture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop complete inverter mechanical layouts from concept through production release.
  • Create innovative packaging solutions for power electronics, ensuring optimum performance, manufacturability and serviceability.
  • Design integrated cooling solutions, busbars, enclosures and mechanical interfaces for motor control electronics.
  • Produce high-quality 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation.
  • Perform thermal calculations and support cooling system optimisation to meet performance objectives.
  • Ensure high-voltage packaging complies with insulation, creepage and clearance requirements.
  • Support Design for Manufacture (DfM), Design for Assembly (DfA) and continuous product improvement activities.
  • Lead or contribute to Design FMEA and process risk assessments.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, purchasing, suppliers and customers throughout development.
  • Maintain engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support engineering change management.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical decision-making across multiple development programmes.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years' experience designing powertrain products within the automotive sector for medium to high-volume production.
  • Proven ownership of the complete mechanical design of an automotive inverter from initial architecture through production.
  • Experience delivering products into manufacturing volumes of approximately 10,000–100,000 units annually.
  • Strong understanding of engineering change, product validation and production release processes.
  • Ability to deliver complex engineering programmes to demanding quality, cost and timing objectives.

Desirable

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Electrical harness routing
  • Vehicle-level packaging
  • HV battery, charger or Power Distribution Unit (PDU) integration
  • ISO 26262 product development
  • ISO 9001 engineering processes
