A part-time (0.8FT) Project Officer position is available for the project ‘Identifying the impact of recent fragmentation of common toad (Bufo bufo) populations in England’. The role is fixed term for 18 months from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2028, with a salary of £30,000 pro rata (£24,000 p.a.) plus a pension scheme. The position is flexible in location and will report to the Coordinator of ARG UK and the Science Officer at Froglife.
This exciting opportunity involves leading a Natural England funded Species Recovery Programme (SRP) project. The project aims to quantify changes in the number of breeding ponds and terrestrial habitat of the common toad across five counties in England from the 1990s to the present day. Responsibilities include mapping known breeding ponds, measuring and modelling aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and comparing changes in study landscapes with regional changes in common toad populations.
The Project Officer will coordinate and support local citizen scientists and volunteers to survey known breeding ponds, establishing their current use by common toads and other amphibians. Fieldwork will involve day and night-time surveys at various sites, requiring travel to remote locations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish the status of historic common toad ponds.
- Map historic and current breeding ponds and model connectivity using the amph4pop model.
- Compare changes in connectivity with regional changes in common toad populations.
- Liaise with landowners and managers to facilitate access for surveys.
- Support volunteers and citizen scientists in pond surveying, ensuring health and safety considerations are met.
- Manage project administration and budgeting, including presenting monthly expenses.
- Provide regular updates and reports to line managers and the steering group.
- Conduct amphibian and pond surveys during the toad migration period.
- Coordinate and staff project workshops at scientific meetings.

- A degree in biological, conservation or environmental science.
- Experience in computer modelling, GIS, and R statistical package.
