The Vacancy

Purpose of the role

To support team in addressing immediate production stops by investigating, identifying root cause and implementing component and tooling design updates inline with manufacturability. To advise on NPI projects supporting DFM / DFMEA for moulded part / tooling design.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Contributes to the Moulding Engineering Design workload as required.
  • Use extensive knowledge and experience of modern plastic and or rubber injection moulding processes, strengthened with recognised quality tools to:
  • Provide fast turnaround corrective actions for Process/Quality issues affecting production, and/or customer concerns within the mould shop.
  • Ensure corrective actions meet quality standards, are documented, released back to production and produce lasting consistent excellence of part quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Analyse existing moulding process / process tooling to define areas for improvement.
  • Define, perform and document trials and resulting process improvements.
  • Monitor enhanced processes to ensure improvements are maintained.
  • Support validation, documentation, and implementation to production status of both new mould tools and processes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues & cross functional teams across the business by providing moulding process & material knowledge in NPI / APQP project meetings.
  • Advise on alternatives for obsolete or hard to obtain materials.
  • Design, verifies, prepares, and maintains detailed 3D models, technical design drawings, schematics or specifications for 3D moulded components and tooling using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (currently Creo) and Microsoft software packages (Excel, Word, etc.) ready for manufacture.
  • Able to optimise new component / mould tooling designs using simulation tools such as Moldex 3D.
  • Able to prioritise tasks and progress all work in accordance with published plans and requirements and report progress as required.
  • Resolves manufacturing and other issues in both the early stages of product design and development, as well as responding to requests for assistance to resolve issues with existing products by PRES, Source Change processes, etc.
  • Coordinates drawing and drawing control activities.
  • Possess good understanding of current and new emerging moulding / manufacturing methods, ensuring that product development manufacturing needs are correctly aligned.
  • Interfaces as necessary with both internal and external customers during the mould design process / investigation and rectification process.
  • Provides a formal handover of designed product to the Manufacturing Process Engineering group, via pre‑production process & design reviews.
  • Adherence to current Amphenol policies typically including COSHH for the introduction of new materials/chemicals into test, development or production.
  • Carries out such other duties that may be reasonably requested.
Person SpecificationQualifications

Minimum BEng level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Scientific subject. Currently or working towards Chartered/Incorporated Engineer status and member of Professional Engineering Institution.

Experience

Minimum 3 years Design Engineering experience preferably in Automotive or Aerospace manufacturing industry – Moulded Component Bias. Experience using CREO or similar 3D CAD and product lifecycle management software. Experience with simulation software to refine component/tooling design eg Moldex 3D. Experience of design for manufacture and design for assembly.

Technical

Good understanding of moulding technology, design for moulding in volume production. Mechanical bias knowledge with some electrical familiarity. Good understanding of GD&T and creation of detail and manufacturing drawings to BS8888 or similar. Understanding of following design development process including risk assessment and DFMEA, DFM/A (design for manufacture and assembly).

Skills and Competencies

Understanding manufacturing processes and tolerances. Ability to clearly communicate technical information to technical and non-technical colleagues. Strong interpersonal and team working skills. Ability to manage self and work to meet deadlines under pressure.

Additional Technical

Electrical knowledge with Mechanical skills. A good understanding of the NPI process and getting products into manufacture.
