The Opportunity

Ampere Recruitment is working exclusively with a VC-backed energy storage start-up building plug-in battery systems for homes and small businesses, aggregated into a virtual fleet for grid flexibility. Backed by founders with deep expertise in power electronics, energy storage, and grid systems, this is a genuine ground-floor opportunity. We are seeking a founding Power Electronics Engineer to own the full hardware architecture — from next-generation inverter development through to supplier management and mass production. The role can be scoped at Senior, Lead, or Principal level depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end hardware architecture: inverter, BMS, battery pack, thermal management, protection, and communications interfaces
  • Develop and evaluate advanced bidirectional converter topologies — DAB, cycloconverter, cascaded H-bridge, AC-coupled designs, and novel approaches
  • Lead decisions on switching device selection (SiC/GaN), magnetic design, modulation strategy, control loops, EMI/EMC, and safety design
  • Define product-level electrical specifications and translate commercial requirements into engineering constraints
  • Review and validate supplier designs; select and qualify power semiconductors, magnetics, battery cells, and protection ICs
  • Manage ODM/OEM suppliers and CMs through technical due diligence, factory visits, and manufacturing readiness
  • Drive hardware from prototype through EVT, DVT, PVT, certification, and mass production
  • Define and execute test plans covering safety, performance, efficiency, EMC, thermal, and grid-interface behaviour
  • Ensure compliance with G98, IEC, and UL standards; collaborate with firmware teams on hardware–software interfaces

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics; Masters/PhD advantageous
  • Hands-on expertise in advanced bidirectional converter topology design
  • Strong grasp of modulation strategies, magnetic design, control loops, EMI/EMC, and grid interface
  • SiC and/or GaN device experience in high-efficiency converter applications
  • Proficient in PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, or LTspice; Altium Designer or equivalent for schematic/PCB
  • BMS and Li-ion cell integration experience
  • Proven track record from prototype to mass production; direct ODM/CM experience

What's on Offer

  • Competitive salary benchmarked to London market rates + equity options
  • Full hardware roadmap ownership from day one
  • Direct collaboration with an experienced founding team
  • Mission-driven work at the centre of the UK energy transition
