An exciting opportunity has become available for a Senior / Principal Power Supply Design Engineer to join a leading technology company in the South of the UK. You will be responsible for the design and development of advanced DC/DC and AC/DC power conversion solutions for a range of high-performance applications. As a Senior / Principal Power Supply Design Engineer, you will take technical ownership of complex projects from concept through to production, contributing to architecture definition, detailed design, verification, and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of isolated and non-isolated DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies, including high-efficiency switch-mode converters.
- Define power architectures and topologies (e.g., flyback, forward, LLC, full bridge, synchronous buck/boost).
- Select key components including magnetics, semiconductors (Si, SiC, GaN), and control ICs.
- Perform hands‑on prototyping, simulation, and bench evaluation to validate designs against performance, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Generate technical documentation — schematics, BOMs, design notes, test plans, and compliance records.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (mechanical, firmware, compliance, manufacturing) to ensure robust, cost‑effective designs.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
Key Requirements
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
- Strong experience in power supply design — both DC/DC and AC/DC converters.
- Proficiency in magnetics design, control loop stability, and thermal considerations.
- Familiarity with safety and EMC compliance standards (IEC, EN, UL).
- Practical lab experience: oscilloscopes, network analysers, load testing, fault finding.
- (For Principal level) Experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, and making architecture-level decisions.
- Experience with wide bandgap semiconductors (SiC, GaN).
- Simulation tools (e.g., LTspice, PLECS, SIMetrix, MATLAB).
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and DFM.
