Location: Hertfordshire (hybrid/flexible considered)

We’re partnering with a UK-based defence and aerospace power-electronics specialist that designs and manufactures mission-critical power systems used in some of the most demanding environments worldwide. They’re now looking to add a Mechanical Design Engineer to their engineering team — someone who enjoys designing ruggedised, high-reliability mechanical solutions and wants to see their work deployed in real defence and aerospace programmes.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing rugged enclosures, housings, and mechanical assemblies for power electronics used in harsh environments
  • Producing 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings (SolidWorks) from concept through to release
  • Engineering designs to meet shock, vibration, ingress protection, and environmental standards (MIL-STD / DEF-STAN / IP)
  • Supporting thermal management and structural integrity, ensuring designs perform under extreme operating conditions
  • Working hands-on with prototypes, building support, and environmental/EMC testing
  • Creating clear technical documentation, BOMs, and compliance evidence for defence programmes
  • Collaborating closely with electrical engineers, project managers, and suppliers to ensure designs are manufacturable, robust, and cost-effective

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or similar)
  • 3+ years’ experience in mechanical design for defence, aerospace, or ruggedised electronics
  • Strong CAD capability (SolidWorks preferred), with a solid understanding of GD&T and material selection
  • Experience designing for harsh environments, including vibration, shock, and thermal constraints
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-810, DEF-STAN, and structured quality systems (ISO 9001)
  • Detail-oriented engineer who’s comfortable working to tight technical and regulatory requirements

Nice to have (but not essential):

  • Exposure to electromechanical integration
  • Understanding of DFM/DFA for low-volume, high-reliability production
  • Experience working with defence documentation and procurement standards

What’s on offer:

  • Competitive salary aligned with experience
  • Pension scheme
  • Flexible working options
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • The chance to work on long-life defence and aerospace programmes with real-world impact

If this Mechanical Design Engineer is of interest, then please apply with an up-to-date CV and contact information.
