The Safety Specialist serves as an Owner Safety Representative (OSR) supporting construction activities on utility scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across the state of Virginia. This role represents the owner’s interests in ensuring safe work practices and regulatory compliance through reviewing EPC’s safety program and performing various daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly inspections/audits throughout all phases of construction. The Safety Specialist will work closely with the onsite owner’s project management team, EPC’s project team, contractors, and subcontractors to monitor field safety performance, verify compliance with OSHA standards and project safety requirements. Project assignments will be located throughout Virginia. Candidates must be willing to rotate between project sites approximately every six months to one year based on project needs. This position is field focused and requires the successful candidate to spend approximately 60 to 70 percent of their time in active construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Owner Safety Representative supporting construction of utility scale solar and battery energy storage projects.
- Monitor contractor and subcontractor safety performance to ensure compliance with OSHA standards, project safety requirements, and owner expectations.
- Conduct routine field observations, safety audits, and inspections of construction activities.
- Identify hazards and unsafe conditions and coordinate corrective actions with contractors and project leadership.
- Provide clear documentation of observations, findings, and corrective actions.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify and cite applicable OSHA construction standards when addressing safety concerns.
- Support implementation and enforcement of project safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in safety meetings, incident reviews, and project planning discussions.
- Assist in incident investigations and ensure lessons learned are communicated across project teams.
- Utilize digital tools, mobile applications, and reporting platforms to document safety activities and maintain project records.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders to promote a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Construction Management, or a related field OR Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification OR Current OSHA 500 (Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for Construction) certification.
- Minimum of five years of safety experience in the construction industry.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA construction standards and the ability to reference and cite applicable standards in field situations.
- Strong computer and digital reporting skills.
- Ability to utilize Apple or iOS based phone and tablet applications for field documentation and reporting.
- Ability to work effectively in active construction environments.
- Willingness to travel and rotate to project sites throughout Virginia on six month to annual assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience serving as an Owner Safety Representative (OSR) on construction projects.
- Familiarity with large scale EPC construction environments.
