The Opportunity
We are seeking a versatile Small Works and Installation Engineer to join an established fire, security and life-safety business. This field-based position will focus on minor installations, system upgrades, additions and remedial works across a range of fire and security systems. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality technical work while ensuring installations comply with relevant British Standards and health and safety requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer looking for varied work, ongoing technical development and a competitive employment package.
Key Responsibilities
- Installation and Commissioning
- Carry out installation and commissioning works across fire alarm, intruder alarm, CCTV, access-control, door-entry and building-safety systems
- Complete system upgrades, additions, minor works and remedial installations
- Interpret installation plans, technical drawings and project specifications accurately
- Complete cable routing, equipment installation, component mounting and alignment
- Configure, test and commission systems
- Complete all required certification, reports and handover documentation
- Replace faulty emergency-lighting equipment where required
- Maintenance and Fault-Finding
- Diagnose technical faults and complete repairs efficiently
- Deliver a high standard of technical workmanship and customer service
- Participate in an emergency call-out rota, with additional call-out payments
- Maintain detailed and accurate service records, reports and job documentation
- Customer and Team Support
- Build positive working relationships with customers
- Clarify customer requirements, demonstrate systems and resolve technical queries
- Work closely with project managers, surveyors, subcontractors and office-based teams
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and apprentices when required
- Compliance and Safety
- Ensure all work complies with relevant British Standards
- Follow company health and safety procedures
- Complete risk assessments and adhere to safe working practices
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment
- Equipment and Administration
- Maintain the company vehicle, tools, stock and field equipment
- Keep relevant software, firmware and system configurations up to date
- Use mobile devices and job-management systems for scheduling, reporting and job completion
Essential Requirements
- At least two years’ technical experience within small works, installation or service engineering
- Experience within fire, security, telecoms, audiovisual systems or a related technical discipline
- Strong installation, fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Good technical report-writing and documentation skills
- Excellent communication skills and a customer-focused approach
- Ability to work independently and manage a field-based workload
- Comfortable travelling throughout London and surrounding areas
- Good IT skills, including email, reporting software and service-management systems
- Full UK driving licence

- FIA qualifications
- First Aid certification
- IPAF certification
- PASMA certification
- Manufacturer-specific product training
- Experience with Honeywell or similar systems
- Relevant electrical qualifications, including the 18th Edition
Package and Benefits
- Basic salary of up to £43,000, depending on experience
- Expected earnings of approximately £46,000–£47,000 with overtime and call-out payments
