The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Structures Engineer / Bridges Engineer to join our award‑winning and growing Consulting Structures Team in the South West. The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. As a team, we co‑locate with our client at offices in Cardiff, Exeter and Bristol, attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely. The work spans from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to design and construction. We work across the National Highways network in the South West, which includes large and unique viaducts, culverts, under and overbridges of varying forms, ages, and complexities. We could be designing a strengthening scheme, completing maintenance refurbishments, or executing safety improvements. The variety of scopes and structures on the network means that no two projects are the same.

This opportunity would suit a developing Engineer working towards Chartership or Incorporated status, with an understanding of the DMRB and Eurocodes with respect to highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment, and assessment. It is a chance to work on structures locally and see the impact of your work day‑to‑day on a network you would use. You would be part of a team of around 25 engineers locally of varying levels, supported by 350+ Structures Engineers across the UK with a variety of specialisms. Our focus is on developing and growing organically. As an Engineer, you will contribute significantly to this process and gain valuable exposure for your career development.

  • Preparation of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost, and programme.
  • Supporting and guiding more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and actively pursuing professional development of yourself.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at a peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Working within a locally based technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of your activities within a scheme project and team portfolio.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work‑winning functions.
  • Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
  • Experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
