We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Structures/Bridges Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Stafford. We welcome applications from Structural Engineers who can commute to this region on a hybrid basis (Birmingham or Manchester). Amey delivers bridge engineering consultancy services to infrastructure clients throughout the UK and overseas. Our experienced engineering teams support the whole asset life cycle through design, construction, inspection, assessment and maintenance. This role is to manage a structural inspection team to develop a prioritised risk‑based maintenance programme for highway structures which are the responsibility of Staffordshire County Council. You will also collaborate with other infrastructure owners such as rail, national highway, canal, river and private developers to ensure technical compliance of third‑party structures supporting publicly adopted highway. You will work within a supportive team of experienced engineers to deliver whole lifecycle maintenance, optimised to provide timely, cost‑effective solutions, whilst ensuring the efficiency of road space booking with other highway maintenance activities.
The ideal candidate will be a chartered civil or structural engineer or working towards chartership with experience in bridge assessment, design, and maintenance, with the ability to work independently and check technical work of others. Since 2014, our Infrastructure Plus contract with Staffordshire County Council has maintained Staffordshire’s highway asset comprising 6,200km of road, with an appropriate annual budget of £80 million. The structures team maintains critical infrastructure valued at £2 billion, comprising over 1,200 bridges, dams and other specialist structures. Schemes delivered range from multimillion‑pound bypasses such as Stafford Western Access Route, new bridge design, structures replacement, maintenance and assessment. We also work proactively with other infrastructure owners and developers to optimise road space and ensure appropriate technical solutions are implemented.
As a Structural Engineer, you will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion.
- Producing technically sound engineering solutions.
- Taking ownership and supporting the management and technical delivery of projects from start to finish.
- Preparation of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost, and programme.
- Supporting and guiding more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
- Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and actively pursuing professional development of yourself.
- Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
- Working within locally based technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of your activities within a scheme project and team portfolio.
- Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work‑winning functions.
- Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
- Experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
- Good project management skills, particularly in managing multi‑discipline infrastructure projects.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

- Takes ownership of the preparation of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
- Good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
- Demonstrates commercial awareness.
- Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment applied to both design and construction.
- Experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
- Demonstrates an understanding of interface management and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
- Evidence in working toward Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE, or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
