We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Bridges Engineer/Bridges Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Stafford. We welcome applications from Structural Engineers who can commute to this region on a hybrid basis (Birmingham/Manchester). Amey delivers bridge engineering consultancy services to infrastructure clients throughout the UK and overseas. Our experienced engineering teams support the whole asset life cycle through design, construction, inspection, assessment and maintenance. This role is to lead highway structures projects, working within a multidisciplinary consultancy and interfacing with stakeholders, to develop sustainable engineering solutions that are aligned with budget and programme and client expectations. Since 2014, our Infrastructure Plus contract with Staffordshire County Council has maintained Staffordshire’s highway asset comprising 6,200 km of road, with an appropriate annual budget of £80 million. The structures team maintains critical infrastructure valued at £2 billion, comprising over 1,200 bridges, dams and other specialist structures. Schemes delivered range from multimillion‑pound bypasses such as Stafford Western Access Route, new bridge design, structures replacement, maintenance and assessment. We also work proactively with other infrastructure owners and developers to optimise road space and ensure appropriate technical solutions are implemented.
As a Senior Structures Engineer/Bridges Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Structures schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:
- Leading a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
- Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation all the way to handover.
- Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
- Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
- Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
- Liaising with Client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
- Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of their workload.
- Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work winning function.
- Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us:
- Developed experience and expertise within Structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
- An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and Client’s requirements.
- Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
- Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g. LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
- Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
- Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
- Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
- Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
- Incorporated/Chartered status or working towards Chartership with the ICE or IstructE, or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
