The Opportunity

We have a permanent Principal Environmental Consultant position in our Energy Transition & Sustainability (ET&S) team. As a Principal Environmentalist, you will shape and lead the delivery of impactful environmental projects, from scoping studies to full environmental statements, providing insights on key topics such as Population and Human Health, Waste & Materials, and Environmental Management & Sustainability.

The role

  • Lead a multidisciplinary environmental team to ensure delivery of all specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the client’s specifications, and that project requirements are fully met.
  • Act as lead environmental coordinator for major infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate statutory and non‑statutory environmental assessment work for transportation, utility and other infrastructure schemes, liaising with client representatives, planning, project design teams, technical leads and other relevant bodies and organisations.
  • Act as technical approver for major environmental schemes including EIAs, SEAs, environmental technical reports, scoping and feasibility studies.
  • Provide guidance on best methods and practice meeting technical and project requirements.
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and brief junior environmental staff where appropriate.
  • Plan and manage project resourcing requirements, ensuring best use of internal resources while demonstrating competency requirements.
  • Liaise with clients or other stakeholders on technical matters.
  • Advise on environmental aspects of projects including SEAs, EIAs, ecological studies, energy use, environmental risks, etc.
  • Provide Health & Safety leadership to team and contract, maintaining high H&S standards for all survey and site work and general H&S at all times in support of Amey’s Zero Code.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety, Environmental and other appropriate regulations.
  • Be responsible for environmental staff in respect of timekeeping, technical training requirements, development and resourcing.
  • Contribute to the Business Development process in producing information for PQQs and tenders.
  • Effectively manage and respond to project‑related correspondence.
  • Check compliance with the Integrated Management System and assist in its development.

What you will bring to us:

  • A strong undergraduate degree in Environmental or a comparable discipline.
  • A master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Development or a related field (desirable).
  • Demonstrable post‑graduate experience preferably in a professional consultancy role encompassing large rail/infrastructure projects.
  • Chartered status (CEnv, CSci).
  • Experience delivering sustainable solutions through design and construction.
  • Knowledge of the planning process and permitted development is beneficial.
  • Experience working closely with regulatory authorities and various stakeholders.
  • Experience managing a team of multi‑skilled environmental and sustainability consultants and/or third‑party contractors.
  • Confidence in making key decisions on a daily basis.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to plan and deliver works within budgets and programme deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss environmental and sustainability issues and capture feedback.
  • Health and Safety awareness, especially safe working practices and risk assessment related to fieldwork.
