What you will be doing

Our Lead Senior Engineers play an important part within the Highways and Active Travel team. As a Lead Senior Civil Engineer, you will lead junior engineers in designing and delivering a variety of highway and public transport projects, including cycleways, greenways, junction improvements, highway drainage/SUDs, bus priority measures, pavement schemes, maintenance programmes and major roads or bridges. As part of our Belfast team, you’ll work on local projects and support initiatives in Ireland and the UK remotely.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
  • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that meet the quality, cost and programme criteria.
  • Overseeing the work of more junior staff and taking responsibility for their output.
  • Controlling budgets and managing costs associated with the production of deliverables for commercial success.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings and responding to queries.
  • Contributing to bid preparation and the general work‑winning function.
  • Driving effective health, safety and environmental practices within the team.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, typically gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce technically sound solutions and supervise junior staff in the same domain.
  • Experience managing health, safety and welfare tasks, such as Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Knowledge of design and specification processes with the ability to advise and review others’ work.
  • Expertise with relevant engineering software and analytical tools, with a strong eye for quality.
  • A deep understanding of CDM and risk assessment, able to manage and communicate hazards and ensure risk mitigation and transference.
  • Capability to act as Principal Designer on suitable projects.
  • Supervisory and people‑management skills to lead a medium‑sized, locally based technical team.
  • Desirable incorporation or Chartered status, or equivalent professional licence, which may be essential on particular contracts.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of candidates. If you possess most but not all of these skills and experiences, we encourage you to apply and we will provide development or training to support you.

What we can offer

  • Exceptional personal development, training and progression plans tailored to your ambitions.
  • Competitive salary and compensation.
  • Generous pension scheme with extra contributions from Amey.
  • 24 days of annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Family‑friendly policies for new parents or caretaker responsibilities.
  • Membership of our Affinity Networks that connect, support and inspire diverse communities.
  • Two Social Impact Days each year for volunteering and fundraising.
