Are you ready to make a tangible impact on the UK’s strategic road network? We’re recruiting for a Senior Planner – Highways to join our team, where you’ll play a key role in shaping and delivering maintenance programmes across a major highways contract. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of planning activities across both cyclic and reactive maintenance, ensuring works are delivered efficiently, safely and in line with client expectations.
The primary depot for this role is Preston Brook – Runcorn, however the position offers a hybrid working arrangement, with travel to sites and other depots as required. The standard hours of work are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with a hybrid working pattern.
What You’ll Do
- Develop, manage and maintain detailed highways maintenance programmes
- Plan and coordinate cyclic and reactive works in line with client (National Highways) requirements
- Ensure efficient allocation of labour, plant, materials and subcontractors
- Monitor programme performance and take corrective action where required
- Liaise with Operations teams to ensure delivery aligns with safety, quality and financial targets
- Coordinate road space bookings and network occupancy requirements
- Use planning systems to track progress, update programmes and report on performance
- Provide regular updates and reports to stakeholders on programme delivery and risks
- Support financial forecasting of planned works and highlight variances
- Work closely with clients, suppliers and internal teams to optimise delivery
- Ensure all activities comply with relevant standards, processes and health & safety requirements
- Support continuous improvement and share best practice across the team

Essential What You’ll Bring:
- Proven experience in planning and coordination within highways, construction or infrastructure, with the ability to lead complex programmes
- Demonstrated experience of leading or managing planning teams, driving performance, accountability and consistency
- Strong programme management capability, including oversight of cyclical and reactive maintenance workstreams
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and competing demands while maintaining programme integrity and delivery confidence
- Strong understanding of maintenance planning, delivery constraints, and operational readiness requirements
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels, including senior client representatives
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with a proactive and solutions-focused approach
- High level of IT proficiency, including planning systems, data analysis tools and Microsoft Office
- Ability to interpret performance data, identify trends and drive improvement actions
- Clear leadership mindset, with the ability to coach, support and develop others
Desirable
- Extensive experience within the highways sector, ideally within a National Highways environment
- Knowledge of National Highways contracts, performance frameworks and compliance requirements
- Understanding of roadspace booking, network occupancy and traffic management constraints
- Experience in financial forecasting, cost control and programme reporting at a regional or contract level
- Experience of driving process improvement, standardisation and planning maturity across teams
- Familiarity with key systems such as Confirm, Connect, or equivalent planning tools
