This is a permanent position for a Rail Systems Engineer and Design Integration Engineer at all levels (Engineer, Senior Engineer, Lead Senior Engineer) to join our System Engineering team, within our Consulting Rail division. Locations across Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, Cardiff and elsewhere in the UK.

Amey Consulting works on major railway infrastructure projects across the UK, including Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, North West & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. The role

You’ll play a pivotal role in delivering innovative rail solutions, working across the whole railway system including rolling stock integration, infrastructure, operations, and maintenance.

Responsibilities Include

  • Rail Systems Engineer: Apply Systems Engineering techniques to define, integrate and deliver whole railway system engineering solutions over time. Support requirements management and V&V activities, including developing project requirements from the Client Remit and managing change. Manage the satisfaction linkages between different levels of requirements. Apportion requirements into scope packages for delivery. Support the project’s verification and validation activities against the requirements. Manage periodic reporting of metrics. Integrate complex and novel interface areas – in particular between infrastructure and rolling stock. Integrate infrastructure change with Operations, Maintenance organisations and Train Operators. Support integration testing between new rail vehicles and the transformed infrastructure. Produce and implement Systems Integration Plans (SIP), Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP), and S-RAM Plans; support setting RAM targets. Prepare and review technical reports and programmes of work.
  • Design Integration Engineers: Deputise for the CEM on a wide range of design projects, applying Systems Engineering techniques to define, integrate, and deliver quality engineering solutions. Allocate project requirements, ensuring each has a discipline owner, and maintain the compliance matrix (V&V). Support verification and validation activities by discipline design leads. Prepare and review action logs, project programmes, and ensure cross‑discipline requirements are captured and communicated. Support CEMs and PMs using appropriate systems engineering processes within the End‑to‑End Stage Gate process. Facilitate impact assessments for project changes and support the CEM in managing the IDC process to closure. Collaborate with Technical Directors, Practice Leads, and Team Leaders to drive technical excellence and continuous improvement on multidisciplinary projects.

What You Will Bring To Us

  • Developed experience and expertise in the application of systems engineering processes, gained in an engineer role or equivalent within the rail sector.
  • Demonstrable experience in the application and delivery of requirements management and V&V within major multidisciplinary rail infrastructure projects.
  • Experience using Bentley ComplyPro or IBM DOORS (desirable).
  • Proven track record in delivering rail engineering designs in a specific discipline with an innovative approach to solving client problems.
  • Experience understanding, interpreting and communicating the technical requirements of contracts, specifications and appropriate standards.
  • Experience on multidisciplinary rail projects; knowledge across several railway disciplines or reasonable experience in at least one specific discipline.
  • Professional registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
  • Strong knowledge of design processes and procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of CDM regulations and the principles of 'Safe by Design', combined with strong knowledge of system safety and the application of the CSM‑REA.
  • A solid grasp of engineering management practices for delivering multidisciplinary railway infrastructure projects.
  • Collaboration with colleagues at all levels and a client‑focused approach to service delivery.
  • Excellent communication skills, engaging clients, suppliers, developers and consultants, while demonstrating strong teamwork and commitment to meeting strict deadlines.
