We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. Our shared office locations are in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff. We welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects, including Wales & Borders, we support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in‑house engineering team delivers design solutions across all Network Rail stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

As a Senior Engineer, you will act as a team leader, providing effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Rail schemes. You will also take the lead on projects and mentor junior designers, overseeing the production of technically sound deliverables for engineering commissions.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead a team and produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to ensure quality, cost and programme criteria are met.
  • Oversee the actions of junior staff and take responsibility for their work.
  • Manage commercial success of projects within your portfolio, controlling budgets and costs associated with deliverables.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
  • Contribute to bid preparation and the work‑winning function.
  • Work on site either on a visiting basis or in a full‑time temporary role, including out‑of‑hours work.
  • Manage a small to medium local single‑discipline technical team, including people‑manager duties when required.

What You Will Bring To Us:

  • Developed experience and expertise within the Rail/Civil engineering field, gained in an engineer role or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline.
  • Ability to produce or oversee technically sound Rail engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
  • Experience with project‑related health, safety and welfare tasks, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Successful completion of the initial professional development leading to Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent licence.
  • Demonstrable commitment to the professional review or end‑point assessment, culminating in Chartered or Incorporated status.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
