The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. With an office space in Cardiff and a hybrid working system, we invite applications from across the region. The Cardiff Highways team has a healthy pipeline of high-profile and diverse project work on the South East Wales Technical and Professional Services Framework (SEWTAPS), South West and Mid Wales Regional Civil Engineering Services Framework (SWMWRCES), South Wales Trunk Road Agency (SWTRA) and North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency, all with exciting roles from Project Manager through to Design Manager, all with exposure to local Clients within Wales.

The role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Highways Engineer to support our Design and Development team. As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer and lead junior Engineers in the design and delivery of multiple highway projects ranging from junction improvements to new roads and bridges.
Responsibilities include:
- To work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
- The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
- Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
- Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
- Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of workload.
- Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function.
- Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full-time but temporary role and including out of hours working.
What you will bring to us:
- A Degree/Masters qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Relevant experience in highway engineering, particularly local roads and S278 layouts.
- The ability to work in a commercial and customer focused way which achieves programme, meets performance targets and generates income.
- Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff.
- A good understanding of Manual for Streets, DMRB, other national standards, best practice guidance, local standards etc.
- A good understanding of the CDM regulations and their relevance to highway design.
- The ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for delivery of services when required.
- Can deliver on time, within budget and to the quality required.
- Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team.
