We are excited to offer a Mechanical Fitter Apprentice to join our SBIM account based in Severn Bridge.

Starting Salary: £25,913.00 per annum (Subject to review)

Location: Severn Bridge Specialist Bridges - M5 Avonmouth Bridge, M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, M48 Severn Bridge.

Working hours per week: Monday - Friday 7:00 - 15:00, optional overtime weekend & Night work. 40hrs/week

Start date: September 2026

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto the Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Level 3 programme, which takes approximately 39 months to complete. You will be fully supported by our partnered college, with 1‑2‑1 guidance, e‑learning materials, and a team of experts on hand to provide advice and technical knowledge in your workplace.

Severn Bridges is working in partnership with National Highways on the Specialist Bridges Inspection & Maintenance contract across three major structures in the Southwest of England over a 15‑year period. This includes: M5 Avonmouth Bridge, M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M48 Severn Bridge.

We are responsible for cyclic maintenance, daily structural inspection checks, safety patrols, and responding to incidents affecting structural integrity.

What You Will Do

As an Apprentice Engineering Fitter, every day at Amey will be different! One day you might be repairing MEWPs, and the next you could be working with generators and drills.

Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for repairing all types of plant and equipment as required, ensuring that all equipment is maintained in accordance with relevant standards and procedures.
  • Your day-to-day responsibilities will include the following:
  • Work with all onsite plant, including gantries, cradles, vehicles, trailers, etc.
  • Carry out six‑monthly maintenance and servicing of gantries, including dismantling and changing gearboxes, drive motors, and—on a six‑yearly cycle—removing components (e.g., drive bogies) for ISE works.
  • Work at height and over water (River Severn, Wye and Avon).
  • Ensure compliance with the Maintenance Management System and maintenance programmes in line with approved manuals and schedules.
  • Complete all documentation, work orders and service sheets, and return them to the office for approval.

What You Will Bring

  • GCSEs at grade C or higher, including Mathematics, English and Science, or equivalent.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to demonstrate basic technical skills within the relevant discipline, with a strong desire to develop your competencies throughout the apprenticeship.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety.
  • Enthusiasm to be part of a high‑performing team and a drive for success.
  • Passion for developing your skills both professionally and personally.
  • DBS requirement.
