We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice to join our Staffordshire account based in Staffordshire.
Starting Salary: £25,536 (Subject to review)
Location: Leek Depot, Staffordshire Highways Services, ST137AB
Working hours per week: Mon–Friday 7:30–16:00. 40hr/week
Start date: September 2026
As part of your apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto the Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Level 2 programme, which will take approximately 21 months to complete. You will be fully supported by our partnered college through 1‑2‑1 support, e‑learning materials, and access to technical experts in the workplace.

We take pride in delivering exceptional services across 6,000 km of Staffordshire’s network—ensuring roads, cycle routes, bridges, tunnels, lighting, drainage, traffic signals, trees and land are well maintained to enhance the lives of residents and communities.
What you will do
- As a Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice, every day will be different. One day you might be installing traffic management systems; the next, you may be carrying out minor civil works such as temporary patching or ditching.
- Perform a variety of highway maintenance tasks, including carriageway and footway patching, kerbing, ironwork replacement and drainage maintenance.
- Attend work briefings to receive instructions and guidance on driving and operating vehicles and plant equipment, using both general and specialist skills.
- Participate in 24‑hour standby rotations during summer and winter for incident response, winter maintenance services, precautionary gritting and snow clearance.
- Allocate and track time and resource utilisation in line with the relevant allocation system.
- Maintain accurate records, complete all required paperwork, and communicate effectively with Amey colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients and customers.
What you will bring
- If you do not hold GCSE/Functional Skills qualifications, you must achieve a minimum of Entry Level 3 in Maths and English during initial assessment.
- Full UK Driving license.
- Passion for developing your skills both professional and personally.
