The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent HSEQ Adviser to join our Consulting Highways team. With shared office space across Scotland , we welcome applications from across the region.

The role

At Amey we put safety first, always. As a HSEQ Advisor at Amey Consulting within our Highways Sector, you will play a pivotal role in driving the continuous improvement of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) standards across a range of highways design projects while promoting a positive safety culture across all levels of the business. Responsibilities include:

  • HSEQ Compliance: support management teams to ensure that projects comply with relevant legislation, industry standards, and Amey Consulting's Integrated Management System (IMS). Advise project teams on HSEQ matters, helping them to interpret and implement standards, including external sector standards notably BS EN ISO 45001, BS EN ISO 14001 and BS EN ISO 9001.
  • Incident Management & Investigation: Conduct thorough investigations into accidents, incidents, and close calls, identifying root causes and corrective actions. Provide recommendations for improvement and track implementation of these actions to completion.
  • Support the sector operations teams to monitor the reporting, investigation, quality, and closure of corrective actions.
  • Audits and Assurance: Conduct internal and external audits and inspections to verify compliance with HSEQ requirements. Ensure findings are communicated, action plans are developed, and follow-up audits are conducted to close out non-conformances. Write reports and documents that are clear, concise, and easy to understand
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Support project teams in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks through detailed risk assessments and the application of CDM and Safe by Design principles. Collaborate with other business units to ensure risks are managed effectively.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement : Engage with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to understand their expectations and ensure HSEQ objectives are aligned with project deliverables. Build strong relationships to foster an ongoing collaborative relationship.
  • Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Promote innovation in safety, quality, and environmental management practices. Identify areas of strength and best practice so that they can be shared and used by other teams. Develop and support the implementation of new tools, processes, and initiatives aimed at improving HSEQ performance and reducing environmental impact, including carbon reduction.
  • Training and Development: Provide HSEQ briefings, facilitating workshops for staff to raise awareness on key HSEQ issues. Develop and deliver briefing material tailored to specific projects and sector.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with managers, engineers, designers and technical Practice leads to ensure HSEQ issues are integrated into design processes. Regularly engage with employees through site visits, inspections, and safety workshops to maintain high standards of HSEQ compliance.
  • Ethical Culture Promotion: Promote and foster an ethical and safety-conscious culture within the assigned Sector and subsequent projects, ensuring that HSEQ values are embedded into everyday activities.
  • Always uphold Amey’s core value of ‘safety first, always’, by following and promoting our strong safety measures to reduce the risk of injury or ill health to everyone by applying and working within our Zero Code framework.
  • Stay updated with legislation, developments and best practices within areas of expertise.
  • Carry out any other similar duties, as required

What you will bring to us:

  • A core qualification in a key (HS discipline) e.g for Health and Safety at least a NEBOSH level three qualification
  • Working towards or has ability obtain higher level safety qualifications diploma/degree L4/6.
  • Entry-level qualification and membership of a professional institution (IOSH, IEMA, CQI or similar) and moving towards full membership
  • Investigation qualification or ability to obtain
  • A fully up to date CPD record with a relevant professional body
  • A full and current driving licence valid in UK
  • A basic understanding of at least one other area of the core HSEQ discipline in addition to their specialty eg E/Q
  • A good understanding of Integrated Management Systems
  • Interpersonal skills to build and foster cooperation, through collaboration with employees, management, and other key stakeholders as necessary with a view to continually building and encouraging good working practices, support, challenge and improvement.
  • Technical knowledge, backed by some experience, in one or more of the following topics: Health & Safety, Environment & Sustainability and Quality & Assurance management systems.
  • A solid understanding and relevant experience of pertinent regulations, standards, and best practice
  • Proven experience in a HSEQ role within the Highways or engineering sector, preferably with a focus on Highways design projects or similar high-risk environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in risk management, incident investigation, and auditing.
  • Experience in interpreting and implementing external standards and CDM/Safe by Design principles
  • Competent and able to undertake audits to current versions of BS EN ISO 9001, BS EN ISO 14001 and BS EN ISO 45001.
  • A working knowledge of electronic/ online reporting systems and the ability to update entries. Competent and able to conduct incident and accident investigations using the TopSet methodology or equivalent and provide advice on preventive actions to address root cause.
