We have a permanent opportunity for a Design Delivery Project Manager to join our Consulting Rail Design team. This role supports the Cardiff Crossrail project, where Amey is the Principal Designer Advisor, delivering the Preliminary and Detailed Design phases of this major tramway scheme. Cardiff Crossrail will provide a direct rail connection between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay, enhancing connectivity, capacity and passenger journeys across the city. Our in-house Rail Design capability delivers design across all Network Rail stages and rail disciplines.
The standard working week is 37.5 hours, with flexible working practices. The role is primarily based in Cardiff, with an expectation of 2–3 days per week on site and occasional site visits, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
Our Design Delivery Project Managers play an important part within the Rail Design team and alongside our clients. As the Design Delivery Project Manager for Cardiff Crossrail, you will take responsibility for the coordination and integration of multidisciplinary design outputs, operating under NEC4 contract conditions. You will act as a senior point of contact for the project, leading design delivery activities, managing interfaces, maintaining programme and budget control and supporting strong stakeholder relationships throughout the design lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of project delivery, including scope, schedule, budget, risks and quality.
- Manage and coordinate a multi-disciplinary team to deliver design outputs on time and within budget.
- Implement effective project controls and reporting to monitor progress and ensure NEC4 compliance, including management of early warnings, compensation events, and programme submissions.
- Manage supplier engagement and ensure contracts, subcontracts and purchase orders are in place before starting work.
- Champion health, safety and environmental standards throughout.
- Lead supplier engagement, ensuring contracts are in place before work begins.
- Support strategic decisions, dispute resolution, and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
- Regularly forecast and report on financial performance, identifying and addressing risks to keep the project on track.
- Coach and motivate the team to achieve high performance.
- Attend meetings with clients, suppliers and third parties.
We Want To Hear From You If You Have
- Proven experience delivering complex rail infrastructure projects, ideally within a station or footbridge context.
- Strong working knowledge and practical application of NEC4 contracts.
- Demonstrable leadership in managing multi-disciplinary design teams and interfacing with clients and stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Track record of delivering projects in compliance with statutory, legal, and contractual obligations.
- Experience in financial forecasting, budget management, and commercial reporting.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline (MEng / BEng preferred).
- Proficiency in project management tools such as MS Project, Primavera and financial systems.
- NEC4 contract management experience.
