Location: HMP Cardiff, Knox Rd, Cardiff CF24 0UG
Position: Permanent General Building Engineer, based on site.
Hours: 39 hours per week (8am-5pm with 1 hour lunch break; 1 in 3 weekend working 8am-4pm; 15% shift allowance).
Summary: General Building Engineer responsible for ensuring planned and reactive maintenance tasks in the prison are carried out safely, compliantly and timely.
What you will do
- Ensuring availability of critical parts for statutory tasks and managing remedial tasks in the CAFM system.
- Performing general and semi‑skilled maintenance activities, including security systems like CCTV and alarms.
- Conducting monthly checks and tests of fire extinguisher equipment, fire hydrants, and hoses.
- Completing quarterly RCD testing and inspecting misting units.
- Maintaining fire doors and performing flushing and tap temperature tests as per water risk assessments.
- Undertaking monthly and annual emergency lighting checks.
- Checking and testing smoke vents as required.
- Carrying out any other duties as required.
What makes this role unique
Work alongside engineers across the site with independent tasks. Prison security clearance is required; Amey will support the clearance process.

Qualifications & experience
Ideally, qualified in multiple maintenance areas with experience in general building maintenance. Experience in a custodial environment, basic health and safety knowledge, and exposure to building and system compliance are desirable, though we will provide necessary development.
