Working for us, you’ll be delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future. Our people are driven by a set of strong values, based on safety, insight and collaboration.

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced and visionary leader in the transport planning sector? Do you have a great track record of delivering innovative and sustainable solutions for complex transport challenges? Do you want to join one of the leading engineering consultancy firms in the UK and Ireland and make a difference in transforming society? Do you want to join a rapidly growing team? If yes, then we have an exciting opportunity for you.

The Role

We are looking for a Technical Director to join our Transport Planning team and assist in leading the growth and development of our business across the UK with a remit focusing on England and Wales. We are also looking for a Technical Director to join our Transport Planning team to lead our team in Northern Ireland but with a remit to work across the island of Ireland as well as to support the wider UK team. You’ll typically have 15+ years of post-graduate experience in transport planning, with proven experience in leading workstreams, managing client relationships, and contributing to business development. As a Technical Director within our Transport Planning team, you will be based in one of our expanding Birmingham, Manchester, or Belfast offices, overseeing a dynamic team based in offices across the British Isles. You will report to the Practice Lead and work closely with other Regional Leads, collaborating with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions. Your strategic vision and technical prowess will be instrumental in shaping the future of transportation infrastructure.

We have a varied workload primarily working for public sector clients through our substantial frameworks such as the Midlands Highways Alliance for which we have recently supported Walsall Council in a Public Inquiry, and are supporting Milton Keynes Council on the design and modelling of seven junction upgrades. Through the OneTrafford Partnership we have recently supported their planning application for the Carrington Relief Road. On the Department for Infrastructure (NI) Major Works and Partner contracts we have recently secured commissions for Active Travel infrastructure in Strabane and Craigavon. Additionally, we are retained by Transport Infrastructure Ireland on Frameworks 379 and 349 to help deliver national road, greenway, and active travel infrastructure. You will collaborate with other Regional leads in bringing the best of Amey to your client base, but also contribute your expertise to international projects, for example in Australia through our subsidiary Premise, and in the Bahamas, where we are developing a 20-year Transport Masterplan alongside a traffic management project to bring significant improvements to downtown Nassau. We are looking for the right person to lead on the delivery of projects under these frameworks and for our other clients, as well as someone who can help us win new work.

Responsibilities

  • You will provide visionary leadership to the Transport Planning team in England and Wales, or across Ireland, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • You will mentor and develop team members, nurturing their technical and soft skills by being at the forefront of continued professional development.
  • You will work to foster a collaborative environment and you will support the Practice Lead to further develop a culture that places emphasis on the health, safety and wellbeing of our team.
  • You will identify growth opportunities, build strong client relationships, and contribute to winning new projects.
  • Raise the profile of Amey Transport Planning within the wider industry through, for example, presenting at conferences.
  • You will leverage your deep understanding of transport planning, traffic engineering, and sustainable mobility to drive impactful solutions.
  • You will oversee the successful execution of complex projects, ensuring high-quality deliverables and adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • You will also produce and negotiate fee proposals and manage the financial aspect of projects.
  • You will stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, encouraging innovation within the team.

Requirements

  • You will have a proven track record in transport planning, ideally within a large consultancy environment delivering complex projects for public sector clients.
  • You will be able to demonstrate your ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams.
  • You will have a deep technical knowledge of transport planning with a focus on areas such as Development Planning, Transport Modelling, Business Cases, and Active Travel.
  • You will have an existing client base that you can leverage to bring in new work as well as supporting and growing existing pipelines of work.
  • You will have a relevant degree.
  • You will ideally have a Masters degree and we value your commitment to being chartered in your field of expertise.
