Amey is a global, integrated infrastructure consultancy and operations partner. We design, deliver, protect and maintain critical assets and systems across the lifecycles of new and legacy transport and infrastructure projects. We are looking for a Technical Director to join our Geotechnics Consulting team. The role will be headquartered in shared office space in Birmingham, York, Manchester or Cardiff, but the successful candidate will work across the UK.

Opportunity

The Technical Director will act as a technical specialist and subject‑matter expert within the Geotechnics discipline, providing direction, guidance and supervision to technical teams and to operational managers, clients and suppliers. The role will support a technical excellence agenda and act as the people manager when required.

Role

  • Provide subject‑matter expertise and technical guidance to geotechnical teams across the UK.
  • Lead the preparation and checking of geotechnical designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to meet quality, cost and programme objectives.
  • Take commercial responsibility for the success of assigned projects, controlling budgets and managing costs.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives, including presenting proposals to director‑level stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for technical initiatives and champion their development.
  • Lead the preparation of geotechnical bids and overall work-winning activities, including acting as bid director where required.
  • Provide on‑site support, either on a visiting basis or temporarily, including out‑of‑hours work.
  • Assume people‑management responsibilities when business needs dictate.

What You Will Bring To Us

  • Strong evidence of using an external professional network for business benefit, particularly during the bidding process.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status (or equivalence) with a professional institution such as the Geological Society or ICE, to be held or achieved within six months of commencement.

Skills

  • Deep expertise in engineering theory, applying first principles to rare situations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of geotechnical design, specification and project scope, with experience of acting as Design Team Lead on minor and major projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in relevant geotechnical software and analytical tools, with the ability to validate and approve new tools.
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical suppliers and their services, maintained through regular industry contact.
  • Excellent oral communication skills, capable of presenting to peers, senior colleagues and clients, and leading internal training workshops.
  • Profound understanding of CDM and risk assessment, with experience in hazard and risk management, communication and mitigation.
  • Capable of acting as Principal Designer on all projects.
  • Ability to resolve interface clashes and manage interfaces within the discipline.
  • People‑management and supervisory skills, able to direct technical teams regardless of location and undertake people‑manager roles as required.

Technical Competencies

  • Track record of managing health, safety and welfare tasks, e.g. Integrated Management System and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Capability to act as engineering lead for a project, such as Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) or Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Network Rail schemes.
