We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Assistant Traffic Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team in Liverpool. The standard hours of work are 40 hours per week, but we offer a range of flexible working practices, including hybrid, part‑time and flexible working patterns. With our network of offices across the UK and now Ireland, we are open to discussing working options that match your needs, with the flexibility to change how you work as your life evolves.

As an Assistant Traffic Engineer you will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion. Responsibilities include:

  • To work in a team, producing technically sound traffic engineering solutions including Traffic Regulation Orders, speed limits and traffic calming measures.
  • Supporting the management and technical delivery of projects from start to finish.
  • Undertake technical design work including the production of electronic drawings using AutoCAD and other related software.
  • Respond to the public, Councillors, MPs etc. regarding traffic‑related enquiries, complaints and FOIs.
  • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Support effective health and safety practices within the team.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Attained or be working towards ONC, HNC/BEng in Civil Engineering or similar.
  • Design experience within a traffic engineering environment.
  • Experience in the use of AutoCAD/KeyLines to produce technical drawings.
  • Experience of traffic sign design and use of KeySign/KeyPost.
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
  • Experience of writing Traffic Regulation Orders.
  • Experienced in following procedures associated with the management of health, safety and welfare.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical and specification processes and is starting to take ownership for the production of deliverables with appropriate supervision.
  • Knowledge around designing a variety of schemes; parking management, cycling, traffic calming, priority working, minor highways, bus lanes etc.
  • Good competence with relevant software and similar analytical tools.
  • Basic understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
  • Experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects.
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of the different interfaces on projects.
