We have a permanent Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team in Bristol. National Highways, formerly Highways England, have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that National Highways have ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for 6 years.

As a Senior Drainage Engineer, you will play a crucial role in managing the design and delivery of projects on the Highways account. This includes a wide-ranging scope of mainly small and medium-sized projects, with some larger projects included. There will be a particular focus on drainage design using Causeway Flow and assisting with developing in-house drainage team capabilities. Causeway Flow experience is highly preferable.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead a team to produce technically sound highways engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
  • Prepare and check designs in accordance with DMRB and other national design codes, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria.
  • Oversee the actions of junior staff undertaking similar tasks and take responsibility for their actions.
  • Take responsibility for the commercial success of projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing costs associated with the production of deliverables.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings, respond to queries, etc.
  • Contribute to the preparation of bids and the general work-winning function.
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.

What You Will Bring To Us:

  • Developed drainage design experience and expertise within the Highways Civil Engineering field, gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions including highways drainage, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising junior staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • Experience in project-related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare management (e.g., Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations).
  • Capable of acting as Engineering Design Lead for larger projects when required.
  • Very good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools, in particular Causeway Flow.
  • Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
  • Strong understanding of CDM and risk assessment; experienced in managing and communicating hazards and risks on projects with appropriate risk mitigation and transference; can act as Principal Designer for appropriate projects.
  • Successful completion of either the professional review or end point assessment, resulting in Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned.
