We have an exciting opportunity for a Traffic Signal Engineer to join our dynamic Sheffield team, based on-site at our Olive Grove Depot.
Working hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. The role includes occasional out-of-hours work for signal commissioning and upgrades, participation in a standby rota, and working outdoors across the Sheffield network, including collaboration with contractors during installation and maintenance activities.
As a Traffic Signal Engineer, you will be responsible for the implementation, optimisation, and maintenance of traffic signal systems to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. You will analyse traffic data, develop signal timing plans, and support wider urban mobility strategies.
Key Responsibilities:- Liaise with local authorities, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
- Support the installation, commissioning, and testing of traffic signal systems
- Monitor signal performance and troubleshoot faults across the network
- Respond to and resolve traffic signal faults within key performance requirements
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g. DMRB, TSRGD and local guidance)
- Participate in a standby rota
We want to hear from you if you have:
- Experience in traffic signal design or traffic engineering (typically 2-5+ years)
- Strong understanding of traffic engineering principles and signal control systems (e.g. SCOOT, MOVA)
- Ability to analyse and interpret traffic data and collision statistics
- Knowledge of intelligent transport systems (ITS) and modelling/microsimulation tools
- Familiarity with cycling and pedestrian infrastructure design
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant engineering tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail
- Effective communication and stakeholder engagement
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Project management capability
A full UK driving licence is essential. Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. HERS) is desirable.
