We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice to join our NMC-SW account based in Glasgow.
Starting Salary: 24,898.00 per annum (subject to review)
Location: 150 Polmadie Road, Glasgow, G5 0HD
Working Hours: Monday-Thursday, 08:00-16:30, and Friday 08:00-15:30. Weekend and night shift work is voluntary. 39 hours per week
Start Date: July 2026
As part of your apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto the Construction Civil Engineering SCQF 5 programme, which will take approximately 24 months to complete. You will be fully supported by our partnered college, with 1-2-1 guidance, e-learning materials and a team of experts providing technical support in the workplace.

We are responsible for inspections, cyclical maintenance, asset management, scheme delivery, winter maintenance and incident response.
The team provides engineering design and operational delivery services for more than 600 km of road and 1,650 structures, supporting reliable journeys and excellent customer care. By maintaining the network throughout all weather conditions and during incidents, we help keep people moving, minimise disruption and support thriving communities.
What you will do:
- Every day will be different. One day you may be installing traffic management systems; the next, you could be working on minor civil works such as temporary patching or ditching.
- Routine and cyclical maintenance activities.
- Minor civil and drainage works.
- Carriageway patching.
- Maintain high technical standards.
- Attend project and work briefings as required.
- Drive and operate vehicles/plant requiring general and specialist skills.
- Carry out vehicle checks, routine maintenance (e.g., oil and water checks) and cleaning.
- Undertake all aspects of highway maintenance, including litter picking and general labouring tasks.
- Participate in winter maintenance operations.
- Assist with emergency call-out operations.
- Take responsibility for your safety and the safety of your team, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and protecting the public.
- Carry out vehicle checks prior to shift start, completing defect books correctly.
- Record drivers' hours accurately.
- Allocate and record time and resource utilisation in line with operational systems.
- Keep records and complete necessary paperwork while communicating effectively with Amey colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients, customers and the public.
What you will bring:
- Scottish National 5s (A-C), including English, Maths and Science.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Ability to meet DBS requirements.
- Basic knowledge of health and safety.
