We are seeking a Principal Electromagnetic Engineer to join our Technology & Product Development team. This role is suited to an engineer with strong expertise in electromagnetic machine design, EMAG/FEA, and machine‑level EMC considerations with the ability to engage directly with prototype builds and hands‑on shop floor activities. You will play a leading role in the design, development, and delivery of high‑performance motors, generators, and electromechanical systems for aerospace and defense applications. The role involves requirements interpretation, technical proposal writing, electromagnetic modelling, mechanical integration, DFMEA leadership, and prototype validation through production release. This is an opportunity to contribute to next‑generation aerospace electrification and thermal management technologies within a growing product development environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a focal point for electromagnetic design activities across development programs.
  • Perform detailed analysis using simulation tools such as ANSYS MotorCAD, ANSYS Maxwell with awareness of thermal, mechanical, and system‑level integration considerations.
  • Generate analytical models and calculations to verify sizing, performance, losses, efficiency, and NVH characteristics.
  • Support technical proposal development and work package definition work package management from concept to production, ensuring compliance with functional, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Interpret customer specifications and translate them into robust machine topologies and design concepts.
  • Lead or contribute significantly to DFMEA activities and ensure design robustness and risk mitigation.
  • Provide hands‑on technical support to manufacturing and prototype build activities, including winding, lamination inspection, assembly processes, and root cause investigations.
  • Support validation and qualification testing, including electrical, mechanical, and thermal performance tests.
  • Produce high‑quality engineering reports, design documentation, DFMEA artefacts, test plans, and technical presentations.
  • Prepare and review 2D/3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and BOMs where required.
  • Support creation of verification and validation evidence for design reviews for customer projects.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proven experience in electric machine electromagnetic design (e.g., PMM, BLDC, BLAC, RFM, AFM).
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic theory, machine topology selection, magnetic materials, loss mechanisms, EM‑thermal coupling, and structural considerations.
  • Proficiency with ANSYS MotorCAD, ANSYS Maxwell.
  • Proven experience acting as technical authority, reviewer, or approver in engineering environments.
  • Significant experience with concessions / deviations / non‑conformance management, DFMEA and technical risk management, failure analysis and structured problem‑solving methodologies.
  • Hands‑on mindset with the ability to work directly with prototype hardware and manufacturing teams.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and create coherent machine‑level design solutions.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and teamwork capabilities.

Desirable

  • Experience within aerospace, defence, automotive electrification, or high‑reliability industries.
  • Proficiency with EMC and EMI.
  • Impact of machine design on system‑level EMC performance.
  • Understanding of EMC coupling paths, shielding strategies, grounding architecture, filtering approaches, and their interaction with electric machine and inverter design.
  • Knowledge of NVH, thermal systems, or advanced materials.
  • Familiarity with design‑for‑manufacture and production processes.
  • Awareness of emerging digital engineering methodologies, scripting, or AI‑assisted engineering workflows.

General Requirements

  • Operate effectively within engineering governance frameworks and quality systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and priorities.
  • Strong ownership mindset and accountability for technical decisions.
  • Collaborative approach across global and cross‑functional teams.
