To work within the Mechanical Engineering team as part of Design Engineering (DE) at AMETEK LAND’s head office in Dronfield. The role focuses on the design of mechanical assemblies for new and existing products, primarily using Autodesk Inventor Professional. The products contribute to LAND’s portfolio of non-contact infrared temperature measurement systems used in demanding industrial environments. The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, from early concept and prototyping through to design, supplier engagement, production setup, and release. Design solutions must be innovative, manufacturable, scalable, and serviceable, enabling complex electro‑optical‑mechanical assemblies to operate reliably in extreme temperature and hazardous environments. These products deliver long‑term value to customers by protecting assets, improving safety, preventing failures, and increasing efficiency, energy performance, and product quality.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Contribute to LAND’s core culture by supporting a safe, productive, rewarding, and fair working environment, valuing reliable, practical engineering over unnecessary complexity.
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor and Vault, following company quality processes.
  • Deliver fully reviewed, released 3D CAD models, assemblies, and drawings in line with formal revision and release procedures.
  • Support the NPI process from concept and prototyping through supplier identification, production setup (via SAP), and handover to production.
  • Maintain and improve existing products by implementing engineering changes (ECNs) in line with the Business Process Architecture (BPA).
  • Lead and support compliance activities for environmental, health and safety, and hazardous area certifications (e.g. CE marking, IP ratings, hazardous area approvals), including engagement with external test houses.
  • Produce production documentation including SAP part setup, assembly instructions, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Provide hands‑on, on‑site support to Operations, Production Engineering, Service, and Repairs teams before and after product release, resolving issues and driving iterative improvements in quality and efficiency.
  • Use rapid prototyping, in‑house machining facilities, technicians, and external suppliers to validate designs and ensure assemblies are simple, modular, robust, and manufacturable with minimal parts count.
  • Work closely with electronics, physics, and optical design teams to develop practical, serviceable solutions for housing and aligning optical components, PCBs, detectors, filters, motors, gears, and precision motion systems.
  • Support the wider business by designing jigs, fixtures, tools, and mounts for production, testing, calibration, servicing, and trade exhibitions.
  • Maintain departmental equipment, tools, printers, and prototype stock, ensuring clear ownership, organisation, and visibility of current design revisions.
  • Develop proficiency with purchasing systems, support procurement activities, and build effective relationships with suppliers and contractors.

Key Competencies and Experience

Essential

  • BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related subject)
  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience using Autodesk design tools (Inventor Professional, Vault).
  • Hands‑on practical machining experience (e.g. milling, lathe work, CNC operation/programming).
  • Experience designing opto‑mechanical components, including lens holders and multi‑lens systems.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, working effectively with engineering, operations, service, and commercial teams.
  • High‑quality technical documentation skills using Microsoft 365, including effective use of modern AI tools.

Desirable

  • Training or experience in tolerance analysis (e.g. CTol).
  • Field service experience on mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of thermal management, heat transfer, and CFD modelling.
  • Familiarity with hazardous area environments and certification processes.
