The Senior Mechanical Engineer position at Taylor Hobson is a key role in our Research and Development department. The role focuses on designing and validating ultra‑precision instruments that achieve nanometer accuracies, contributing to the full product lifecycle from concept through manufacture and service.
Key Responsibilities
- Derive mechanical performance specifications for assemblies from system functional requirements.
- Design, validate and manage the timely manufacture of assemblies using onsite manufacturing and external supply chains.
- Generate supporting documentation for manufacturing and service introduction.
- Modify instruments, fixtures and accessories to meet customer specific requirements.
- Lead mechanical design reviews, incorporating health and safety, risk assessments and customer operating considerations.
- Oversee junior and subcontract mechanical engineers.
- Collaborate closely with Business Development and Operations on new and existing developments.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; minimum 5 years experience in end‑to‑end product design.
- Proven track record in manufacturing engineering, materials, processes and quality systems.
- Experience with design of small mechanisms, drives and controls.
- Strong analytical skills with practical problem‑solving ability.
- Demonstrated ability to develop metrology error budgets and life‑testing plans.
- Experience in precision engineering or optics industry preferred but not essential.
Essential Technical Skills
- Proficient in CAD (NX, Catia, ProE or equivalent).
- Experienced with MS Office or similar productivity tools.
- Familiarity with FEA and mathematical analysis (MATLAB, Mathematica, etc.) desired.
- Knowledge of small precision machining processes, materials and kinematic principles.
- Ability to suggest efficient assembly and validation methods.
